The Münchner Kammerspiele is the theatre of the City of Munich. It opened on 1 January 1911 as a private theatre and has carried its name since October 1912; in 1926 it moved into the Schauspielhaus on Maximilianstraße, an art nouveau theatre built in ten months by Max Littmann with the designer Richard Riemerschmid and opened in April 1901, which is still its centrepiece.

It stages contemporary theatre with its own acting ensemble and more than 300 employees, in four venues within walking distance of each other in the centre of Munich: the Schauspielhaus, the Therese-Giehse-Halle, the Werkraum and the Habibi Kiosk. Der Greif, its partner on Off to Elsewhere, is a Munich organisation for contemporary photography founded in 2008.
