The Museum für Fotografie is a museum of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin at Jebensstraße 2, opposite Zoologischer Garten station. The building, by the architects Heino Schmieden and Julius Boethke, was inaugurated in 1909 as a casino for the Prussian officer corps of the Berlin Landwehr division, with a restaurant, guest rooms and ballrooms; it opened as the Museum für Fotografie in June 2004.
Two institutions share its 2,000 square metres: the Newton Foundation on the two lower floors, with exhibitions on Helmut Newton, Alice Springs and their contemporaries, and the Kunstbibliothek’s Collection of Photography in the Kaisersaal on the second floor. That collection, begun in 1868, holds more than 760,000 photographs from the early years of the medium to contemporary works, and its exhibitions come with guided tours, lectures and symposia.
