Berlin'de yaşayan birinci nesil bir göçmen ve kuir bir sanatçı olarak, aidiyet sorusuyla defalarca boğuştum. Suryani's Body “According to sharia laws in Malaysia, a trans* person born in a Muslim family belongs to prison. This is our faith,” said Suryani. For years she passed as Hindu. She fled Malaysia, and after a four-year asylum process in Denmark ended up seeking asylum a second time, in Germany.

Self-Portrait With Julie's Makeup I made this self-portrait after a makeup workshop in the dorm reserved for trans and queer refugees and asylum seekers at risk. A friend I had come to know by photographing her saw how raw my own attempt was and decided to paint me herself. We went to her kitchen at sunset. Her shadow is in the picture now, literally and otherwise.

Come Get Your Honey

Come Get Your Honey, Berlin'de kuir, trans ve toplumsal cinsiyet normlarına uymayan mülteciler ve sığınmacılarla üç yıl boyunca paylaşılan zaman içinde ortaya çıktı. Aklımdan çıkaramadığım bir soruyla başladı: ya fotoğraf, görmekten çok dinlemekle ilgiliyse?

Bu çalışmanın arkasında neredeyse elli kişi var; görünürlük ile anonimliği bir arada tutan seride bunların on beş kadarı yer alıyor. Bazı katılımcılar görünmeyi seçti, bazıları seçmedi ve kitap her iki tercihe de eşit ağırlık veriyor. Portreler, Berlin'in kendisini gösteren fotoğraflarla yan yana duruyor; böylece şehrin hem açıklığı hem sertliği aynı sayfalarda bir arada kalıyor.

Çalışmalarım, fotoğrafı yalnızca görmekten ibaret sayan geleneksel bakışa meydan okuyor ve onun dinlemekle daha çok ilgili olabileceğini öne sürüyor. İnsanları bütünlükleri içinde yakalamaya ve farklılıklarını kucaklamaya çalışırken her temsilin sınırlarını da kabul ediyorum. Görüntülerim kendi kişisel ilişkilerimi ve fotoğrafladığım kişilerin hikâyelerine dair izlenimlerimi yansıtıyor. Bu da onları kendi deneyimimin öznel bir temsiline dönüştürüyor.
